PLC or SCADA: which course should you take first?
The two are not alternatives. How they fit together on a real plant, who should start where, and how our professional courses build on each other.
Two layers of the same system
The PLC is the controller on the plant floor: it reads sensors, runs the logic and switches outputs, every few milliseconds. SCADA and HMI are the screens operators use to watch and adjust that process: alarms, trends, recipes, start and stop buttons. A SCADA screen without a PLC behind it has nothing to show; a PLC without a screen is a black box. On a real plant you meet both, and most automation jobs touch both.
Start with PLC if
- You have an electrical or maintenance background and want to understand why the machine does what it does.
- You will be expected to troubleshoot: that means going online with the controller and reading the logic.
- You have never programmed before. Ladder logic is the gentlest start, and everything in SCADA refers back to PLC tags.
Start with SCADA if
- You already program PLCs or have completed PLC Programming Mastery.
- Your role is operations, control-room design or reporting rather than panel-side maintenance.
Our SCADA and HMI course assumes PLC knowledge equivalent to PLC Mastery, because every exercise connects screens to live controller tags. Taking it first means spending the course catching up on the PLC side.
How the courses build
PLC Programming Mastery is the core. SCADA and HMI sits on top of it, so most people take PLC first and SCADA second. Industrial Robotics and Instrumentation and Control are coming soon and will fit around the same core. Discounts are available when you enrol on more than one course: ask the Academy office.
A common mistake
Choosing by software brand. WinCC, FactoryTalk, TIA Portal and Studio 5000 differ in menus, not in concepts. We teach both Siemens and Allen Bradley in the PLC and SCADA courses so that you can move between plants; the concepts transfer, and the brand-specific clicks take a day to learn.
