Training a maintenance team: what works and what wastes money

Lessons from commissioning and from the classroom: train your team on the same equipment brands your plant runs, check their skills hands-on in the lab, and measure the result in reduced downtime, not certificates.

Train on the equipment you actually run

A generic "PLC course" teaches concepts; a team that runs Siemens S7-1200 on the line and Allen Bradley CompactLogix on the packaging machines needs to go online with both. Before quoting a programme we ask what controllers, drives and instruments are installed, and we build the exercises around them. Where it is safe, we teach on your site using your own panels and equipment.

Verify skills, do not just record attendance

Attendance proves someone was in the room. A verified competency proves they wired the starter correctly, found the fault in the ladder logic, or set up the drive parameters so the motor ramps as specified, with a facilitator watching or assessing the evidence. Our sponsor report lists which competencies each participant demonstrated, so you know who can be left alone with the machine.

Keep the group small and mixed

Fifteen is our maximum because each person needs time on a rig, not a seat behind a projector. Mixing electricians with instrument technicians in the same group pays off: many of the faults on a plant sit at the boundary between the two trades.

Measure the result where it matters

The number that justifies training is not certificates issued; it is mean time to repair, nuisance stops avoided, and jobs no longer waiting for the one person who knows the system. Set the baseline before training and review it three months after.

What wastes money

  • Sending one person to a course and expecting them to teach the others.
  • Courses with no equipment, where the "practical" is a simulation on a laptop.
  • Programmes with no assessment, where everyone passes.
  • Training on a brand the plant does not run, because the course was cheaper.

We invoice the company directly, deliver attendance and competency reports per participant, and issue certificates your HR team can check on our verification page.
