IT / SIWES

What a SIWES placement with us looks like, week by week

The letter, the logbook, the supervisor, the projects, and the difference between watching and doing. For OND, HND and B.Sc students planning their industrial training.

Before you start

Apply online with your institution and matric number, choose three or six months, and tell us when your training window opens. Once we have received your institution's letter and your payment, we issue the IT acceptance letter your school needs. Bring your institution's own letter and logbook format if it has one; we complete whichever your school requires.

Week one

Safety induction, lab rules, and your first wiring exercise. You meet your supervising engineer, who signs your logbook and is responsible for what you learn. You also get a portal login where your sessions, materials and daily report are kept.

Weeks two to six

Rotation through the training areas: PLC programming on Siemens and Allen Bradley trainers, electrical installation and wiring to standard, control panel assembly, motor control with starters and drives, and, on the 6-month placement, instrumentation and calibration (coming soon). Each day ends with a logbook entry and, where the work was practical, a photograph of what you built.

Week seven onward

Project work. Three-month students complete one documented project; six-month students complete several and take the advanced skills modules, finishing with a Certificate of Completion. The difference between a placement that counts and one that does not is simple: here you do the work yourself, and your supervisor verifies it before signing.

What you leave with

  • A completed logbook with daily entries, supervisor signatures and stamps.
  • Project documentation you can present at your defence.
  • On the six-month option, a Certificate of Completion.

Spaces each month are limited, so apply before your training window rather than during it.
